"The Lost Symbol"

by Dan Brown

I must say that this book was quite similar to all Brown's other books in regards to symbols, code cracking and racing the clock. However, Brown has still managed to write an absolute page turner! He kept me in suspense throughout the book and I found it very hard to put down each night. I haven't read a book that quickly for a long time and I found myself getting to bed early so I had time to read each night!

SPOILER ALERT: The following paragraphs contain spoiler content:

I was a bit disappointed when I got to the section of the book where Langdon apparently dies. I had a number of thoughts:

a) if Langdon truly is dead, that's a pretty huge twist with him being the main character and numerous books based on him. Impressive and quite shocking; or

b) Langdon is dead, but through the miracle of fictional writing, he's somehow brought back to life, well, miraculously, which would be very disappointing, because you know in the back of your head an author isn't going to kill off a main character like this, so he has to come up with an outrageous way of bringing him back to life to save the day; or

c) he's not really dead, but Brown really has you convinced he is, but he can't be... but he is... you get the idea! That was the internal dialogue going through my head as I read those few chapters!

As I read on, I discovered that it wasn't a) or b), leaving c)... where I learned about "Total Liquid Ventilation" tanks, or "Meditative Machines". At first I thought it was a mixture of 'b) and c)' and Brown had made up this outrageous machine so that his main character wouldn't be killed off. But, unbeknown to me, these things really do exist! So, good on you, Brown, for the twist, but I'm still not sure if I'm a little disappointed by that story line... undecided on that one!

Once our hero has saved the day, everyone has survived race against time and the code had been cracked, at least to a satisfactory level, I think the book was ready to be finished. However, Brown added some more and I feel that it didn't add to the storyline, it was just his way of adding his own thoughts/opinions on religion etc and I got a bit bored with it.

Over all, though, a wonderful book I enjoyed reading very much!
