"The Father of Love"

by Janette Oke

I love Janette Oke books, so it was nice using this book as my evening devotions. The book contains "Spiritual Insights from the characters and scenes of the Love Comes Softly Series". It provided little snippets from the books, so it was a little like reading the books again, but this time with a devotional aspect. Each devotion comes with a little reading from the books, a summary thought (which, in only a few words, can have a powerful message/insight/thought) and a bible reading to match. It doesn't give 'credit' for which version of the bible the reading comes from, but I expect that it's from the Old King James because of the language used. I appreciate that Janette Oke would have used this version, because it's what Marty and the other characters from the series would have used in 'prairie' days, however, I found some of the verses quite hard to understand their meaning. For example "No chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." (Hebrews 12:11). Now, I do understand what this verse is saying, especially as I know it well in the NIV version, however, it's not a 'smooth' read and takes a bit of concentration! I got through the whole book of devotions... so in the end, it couldn't have been that bad!
