As I have so many books that I want to get through, I thought I'd use some of them as a nightly devotional. Here's how my week looks like:
Monday: Hot Chocolate for Couples (by Cindy Sigler Dagnan) (11 chapters)
Tuesday: A Jewel in His Crown (by Priscilla Shirer) (9 chapters)
Wednesday: Free to Soar (by numerous authors released through Global Pastors Wives Network) (39 chapters)
Thursday: Prayer (by Philip Yancey) (22 chapters)
Friday: The Power of a Praying Wife (by Stormie Omartian) (30 chapters)
Saturday: The Power of a Praying Parent (ditto) (31 chapters)
Sunday: The Power of a Praying Woman (ditto) (30 chapters)
By only reading these books once a week, some are going to take a while to get through, as you can see by how many chapters are in each book. If there's a short chapter/reflection, however, I might just read another chapter or 2! So, if you don't get a review on a book for a little while, you'll know why... you could keep me accountable, though and ask me where the review is, if I haven't put one up by the end of those weeks! (accountable for doing a devotion each night and not skipping out AND accountable for actually getting the review up onto this blog!)
By varying the books each night, I'm hoping to keep myself interested in the nightly devotions. Unfortunately it is certainly a flaw of mine, not doing them on a more regular basis and something that is constantly on my conscience. I often have good intentions and get quite enthused with a new devotional of some sort, but that can fizzle out quite quickly, but unintentionally!
For those of you who have daily/nightly devotions, how committed are you able to remain, or are you like me?!
You crack me up! In a very good way. I would never have thought of combating my temptation to get bored with devotional books by tricking myself like this! Very clever. The chapters mustn't be too long if you can read a whole one at time for devotion. that's good.
ReplyDeleteJoel and I have lunch together (nearly) every day and have our devotion time then. We keep a prayer journal together and talk about what God is saying to us each day. I like it.
That's great, Rach. Vaughn and I are still trying to work out when a good time for us is! Perhaps next year when we're in a parish (!!), we could steal your idea for a lunchtime devotion!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad I crack you up!
