"The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society"

by Mary Ann Shaffer

This book was chosen to read for our Sem Wives Book Club. It's a set of letters (fictional) written during WWII between a lady and the members of the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society. I think I've come to the conclusion that I'm not really keen on books that are a collection of letters - I find that the descriptions and dialogues I need to get absorbed into a story are missing, so I find it harder to sink my teeth into it. So much so that this book is due back at the library today and although I can extend the loan, I haven't finished reading it, but am happy to return it. I was enjoying parts of the book and was interested to see how the story continues to unfold... but I wasn't intrigued enough to extend the borrowing time. I have so many other books that I want to read, I'm happy to move onto them instead.

I wouldn't say that this book is bad or unreadable, it's just not my cup of tea. It was recommended by a friend who enjoyed it, so if you enjoy reading a collection of letters that make up a story, then I am sure you will enjoy this book. For what it was, I think the author has written the letters well - you do feel as though you are reading the letters that were exchanged by the numerous characters and you start to sense their personalities coming out. If I didn't have to return or extend the loan on the book today, I would have kept reading it!
